Happy Independence Day

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore. – Galatians 5:1

Independence Day 2020 is a time for Americans to reflect on all that this nation has been, is, and has the hope to be.

In 1776, thirteen colonies came together to become the United States of America, declaring the dissolution of the political bonds with England and the causes that impelled them to become a separate and independent nation.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness,” they penned. They concluded, “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly public and declare” themselves to be a Free and Independent nation. “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor.”

Afterward, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shows, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

In the midst of the turmoil of July 4, 2020, we urge that you take time from your festivities to appeal to the same “Supreme Judge of the World” who blessed these founders and the birthing of America, that He would see fit to restore America to a greater compassion for one another, to a respect by all for the principles that enhance life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In the remainder of John Adams’ letter, he said, “I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory.”

Sing, be joyful, take pride in the land of freedom, and have a very Happy Fourth of July!
